WHAT IS EXCEDE STERILE SUSPENSION?
WHAT ARE THE INDICATIONS FOR EXCEDE STERILE SUSPENSION IN HORSES AND IN CATTLE?
EXCEDE is indicated for the treatment of lower respiratory tract infections in horses caused by susceptible strains of Streptococcus equii ssp. zooepidemicus.
EXCEDE Sterile Suspension is indicated for treatment of bovine respiratory disease (BRD, shipping fever, pneumonia) associated with Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida and Histophilus somni in beef, non-lactating dairy and lactating dairy cattle. EXCEDE Sterile Suspension is also indicated for the control of respiratory disease in beef and non-lactating dairy cattle which are at high risk of developing BRD associated with M. haemolytica, P. multocida and H. somni.
WHAT IS THE MECHANISM OF ACTION OF EXCEDE?
EXCEDE is a bactericidal antibiotic and works by binding to penicillin binding proteins and interfering with cross linking of peptioglycan in bacterial cell walls, causing bacterial cell lysis and death.
WHAT IS THE DOSE AND ROUTE OF ADMINISTRATION OF EXCEDE IN HORSES?
EXCEDE should be administered as two intramuscular injections to horses, 4 days apart, at a dose of 3 mg/lb (6.6 mg/kg). A maximum of 20 ml per injection site may be administered. Therapeutic drug concentrations are maintained for 6 days after the second injection (or a total of 10 days from the beginning of treatment) against Streptococcus equii ssp. zooepidemicus.
CAN EXCEDE BE USED IN ANY OTHER SPECIES?
EXCEDE for Swine is available for use in swine. EXCEDE for Swine Sterile Suspension 100 mg/ml is a ready to use formulation that contains the crystalline free acid of cefitofur, which is a broad spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic active against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria including B-lactamase-producing strains. Like other cephalosporins, cefitiofur is bactericidal in vitro, resulting from inhibition of cell wall synthesis.
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION
Cattle: As with all drugs, the use of EXCEDE is contraindicated in animals with known allergy to ceftiofur or to the ß-lactam group (penicillins and cephalosporins) of antimicrobials. Do not use EXCEDE in horses intended for human consumption. The administration of antimicrobials in horses under conditions of stress may be associated with diarrhea, which may require appropriate veterinary therapy. Though safe in cattle when properly administered, inadvertent intra-arterial injection is possible and fatal. EXCEDE has a pre-slaughter withdrawal time of 13 days following the last dose in cattle. Do not use in calves to be processed for veal. For complete details, refer to the full prescribing information.
Swine: EXCEDE® For Swine (ceftiofur crystalline free acid) Sterile Solution has a 14-day preslaughter withdrawal. As with all drugs, EXCEDE For Swine should not be used in animals found to be hypersensitive to the product.
