Offer horses comprehensive disease protection with “the perfect pair” of vaccines

AUTHOR: Kevin Hankins, DVM, MBA, Senior Managing Equine Technical Services Veterinarian, Zoetis

As veterinarians, we all want to deliver the best possible care to our patients and confidently assure their owners that their horses are well-protected against disease. Now there’s a way to deliver the comprehensive protection every horse deserves by administering The Perfect Pair of vaccines that protect against core diseases—including rabies—as well as equine influenza and herpes virus (rhino) in a way that’s backed by research.

Core EQ Innovator® and Fluvac Innovator® EHV-4/1 from Zoetis are a comprehensive vaccine pair, created apart to help improve the immune response against equine influenza through separate injections.1,2 These vaccines protect horses against the most prevalent and dangerous equine diseases. Core EQ Innovator protects horses against all five core diseases: West Nile virus, Eastern equine encephalomyelitis (EEE), Western equine encephalomyelitis (WEE), tetanus and rabies. Ongoing survallience has shown that Fluvac Innovator EHV-4/1 cross-protects against newly emerging and conventional influenza.

Vaccines for core and risk-based diseases

Every horse in the United States has the potential to be exposed to every core disease, largely because of the environment in which most horses live. As you may know, the American Association of Equine Practitioners guidelines categorize vaccines as either core or risk based.

Many horses may be at greater risk for particular diseases, including equine herpes virus EHV-4/1 and equine influenza. In these cases, a vaccine that protects against risk-based diseases—those that a particular horse is vulnerable to—is necessary based on veterinary recommendations.

As you may know, core diseases have a high mortality rate and are very difficult, if not impossible, to treat. But they’re easy to help prevent, since vaccines that protect against them are efficacious. Here are five key reasons to include Core EQ Innovator and Fluvac Innovator EHV-4/1 in your vaccine protocol.

1. Demonstrated safety

One of your top concerns may be the reactivity history of rabies vaccines, especially now that rabies is combined with other antigens. Core EQ Innovator has been shown in field safety studies to be 99.7% reaction-free.3,4 Core EQ Innovator is a 1 mL vaccine dose that contains protection against all five core diseases, including rabies. Additionally, Core EQ Innovator is the first and only vaccine containing all core disease antigens shown to be safe for use during the third trimester of pregnancy.

2. Proven efficacy

In a study, dividing core and risk-based disease antigens into separate injections like with Core EQ Innovator and Fluvac Innovator EHV-4/1 provided up to 4.7 times the immune response against equine influenza.2 Combination vaccines that included equine influenza protection had lower immune response to the virus.

Research performed by the Gluck Equine Research Center at the University of Kentucky using viruses from 30 states and Canada over a five-year period demonstrated cross-protective immunological relevance against recently isolated equine influenza virus strains. This ongoing surveillance demonstrates that Fluvac Innovator EHV-4/1 has been immunologically relevant against newly emerging equine influenza virus strains.5-9

3. Optimal vaccine timing

Late spring and summer are peak times for wildlife that can carry rabies and for mosquitoes that can carry West Nile virus, EEE or WEE to infect horses—even though you may not see the clinical signs of rabies until late fall or winter. As a result, all horses should receive their rabies vaccination as well as vaccinations for all core diseases in early spring. A post-winter check-up can also be given at this time. A second visit to conduct a dental exam can be made each fall.

4. Customized patient vaccine protocols

Core EQ Innovator is only available and sold to veterinarians, which allows you to tailor a vaccine schedule for each horse that correlates with what that horse is doing—whether it’s traveling and needs both core and risk-based disease protection or is living solo in a field and requires protection against core diseases. By splitting core from risk-based vaccines, horses receive the protection against the diseases that would most likely affect them. This is in contrast to large-combination vaccines that are sold over the counter and can be administered by anyone.

5. Protection for horses, confidence from owners

Owners have a huge emotional—as well as monetary—investment in their horses. You have a desire to provide the best health care you can for your valued patients. Core EQ Innovator and Fluvac Innovator EHV-4/1 were created apart to help improve the immune response against equine influenza through separate injections. When you choose proven protection by choosing two vaccines, you’re also choosing demonstrated safety and efficacy for your patients.

Don’t forget that when you vaccinate with Core EQ Innovator and Fluvac Innovator EHV-4/1, your owners qualify for the $5,000 Zoetis Equine Immunization Support Guarantee—the most comprehensive vaccination guarantee available giving everyone peace of mind.
