Pfizer Animal Health, Heifer International Collaborate to Support Community Farming

Nation’s leading animal health company focuses philanthropic efforts on helping U.S. families raise livestock

MADISON, N.J.—July 22, 2011—To help educate impoverished families in the United States about how to farm successfully, and to promote self-sufficiency and fight hunger, Pfizer Animal Health has made a $65,000 contribution to Heifer International—world renowned for its efforts to end poverty and protect the environment.
“We’re helping farmers establish themselves so they can provide a consistent and reliable supply of locally grown foods to the community,” said Michael McFarland, DVM, Diplomate ABVP, and Group Director of Veterinary Medical Services & Corporate Citizenship for Pfizer Animal Health. “The donation will go towards programs designed to help communities thrive long term.”

One area of focus in Pfizer’s relationship with Heifer International is to help impoverished families and communities in the United States create sustainable food sources, through unique programs like Heifer’s Seeds of Hope.  A portion of the donation was given to Seeds of Hope to help families in an impoverished area of southeastern Arkansas produce food and income by creating two learning centers for livestock and horticultural education, along with three farmers markets and a community kitchen.

“Pfizer Animal Health’s investment in these initiatives says a lot,” said Marleen New, Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations, Heifer International. “They clearly understand our mission and the importance of supporting programs that give people the education and resources they need in order to live well now and in the future.”

Support for Heifer International is a component of Pfizer Animal Health’s Commitment to Veterinarians™ platform—which offers support through training and education, research and development, investing in the future of the veterinary profession, and philanthropy.
