Zoetis Recommends Pet Owners Protect Their Dogs from Heartworm Disease with New ProHeart® 12 (moxidectin)

Pet Owners Now Have an Innovative Once-Yearly Solution Available to Replace Their Dogs’ Current Monthly Heartworm Dose

PARSIPPANY, N.J. – Sept. 10, 2019Zoetis is encouraging pet owners to have a “heart to heart” with their veterinarians about protecting their dogs from heartworm disease (caused by Dirofilaria immitis), a potentially life-threatening condition transferred by the bite of an infected mosquito. According to the American Heartworm Society, a dog is a natural host for heartworms, and if untreated, their numbers can increase; dogs have been known to harbor several hundred worms in their bodies.1 Heartworm disease is preventable; however, if proper preventative measures are not in place, it can cause lasting damage to the heart, lungs and arteries, or even death. Dog owners should speak with their veterinarians about ProHeart® 12 (moxidectin), the new once-yearly injection demonstrated to prevent heartworm disease in dogs 12 months of age and older.2

“It only takes one bite from an infected mosquito to spread heartworm disease, so it’s important that every dog owner provides their furry companion consistent, on-time prevention all year long,” said Dr. Robert Gribble, DVM, CVPM, Hallsville Veterinary Hospital, Hallsville, Texas*. “Dog owners should ask their veterinarians about the harmful threat of heartworm disease and if switching to ProHeart 12 for the once-yearly dosing that provides a full year of heartworm disease prevention is the right option for their dog.”

All dogs are susceptible to heartworm disease regardless of their age, breed or lifestyle as the disease has been found in all 50 states and is a threat all year long – not just during the spring and summer months.3

“As a dog owner as well as a veterinarian, I know how critically important heartworm disease prevention is for my dogs, but remembering monthly dosing is difficult not only for my family but also for many families with pets,” said Claire Walther, DVM, Veterinary Specialty Team, Zoetis Petcare. “ProHeart 12 is a convenient option for dog owners who want the peace of mind that their dogs are protected all year long against this potentially fatal disease.”

About ProHeart 12
ProHeart 12 is a veterinarian-administered injectable parasiticide for dogs that provides 12 months of heartworm disease prevention, as well as treatment for larval and adult hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum and Uncinaria stenocephala) existing at the time of administration. Just one injection protects dogs against heartworm disease for 12 full months, eliminating the need for monthly dosing.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION
Use PROHEART 12 in dogs 12 months of age or older. Do not administer to dogs that are sick, debilitated, underweight, have a history of weight loss, or to those previously found to be hypersensitive to the drug. Hypersensitivity reactions may occur in some dogs when PROHEART 12 is administered alone or with vaccines. Anaphylactic and anaphylactoid reactions can result in death and should be treated immediately with the same measures used to treat hypersensitivity reactions to vaccines and other injectable products. The most common reported side effects in clinical trials were vomiting, lethargy, diarrhea, and anorexia. People should avoid inhalation, contact with eyes, or accidental self-injection. Certification is required before veterinarians and staff administer PROHEART 12. See full Prescribing Information for PROHEART 12.
