Fetal Protection (FP) Vaccines

Protecting the cow from costly reproductive diseases and keeping her calf safe

As a cow/calf producer, you go the extra mile to provide care to newborn calves. Whether it is warming up a chilled calf on the floorboard of the pickup or using a hairdryer to dry a calf in the utility room, you do what it takes to give that newborn a strong start.

Whether you use the BOVI-SHIELD GOLD FP® product line, CATTLEMASTER GOLD FP® products or PREGGUARD GOLD FP® 10, you have the highest levels of fetal protection available, and all are backed by the Fetal Protection Guarantee from Zoetis.

  • The reproductive forms of infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) and bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) Types 1 and 2 are the two viral diseases of greatest concern for cow/calf producers.

    • BOVI-SHIELD GOLD FP 5 and BOVI-SHIELD GOLD FP 5 HB vaccine lines offer the highest level of fetal protection against BVD Types 1 and 2 viruses and abortion caused by IBR virus of any product line on the market.

    • CATTLEMASTER GOLD FP lines are the only killed BVD vaccines to offer fetal protection against IBR abortion and BVD Types 1 and 2 persistent infection.

    • PREGGUARD GOLD FP 10 is the only bovine respiratory syncytial virus-free combination viral/Campylobacter/Leptospira vaccine to offer fetal protection against IBR abortion and BVD Types 1 and 2 persistent infection.

  • Very few vaccines feature FP in their name. All FP vaccines from Zoetis protect against IBR abortion and BVD persistent infection. Fetal Protection vaccines from Zoetis are demonstrated effective.
  • When used according to label directions or additional qualifying program indication, the Fetal Protection vaccines from Zoetis are all backed by the Fetal Protection Guarantee.

  • A Fetal Protection solution to match any operation

    • If you keep good records and tightly manage your breeding season, then prebreeding vaccinations with BOVI-SHIELD GOLD FP or PREGGUARD GOLD FP are the best option to provide superior reproductive protection throughout gestation.
    • If your management style is less intensive, or you purchase pregnant heifers or cows with an unknown vaccination history, then the ideal solution is CATTLEMASTER GOLD FP — safe for any cow, any calf, any time. The vaccine offers fetal protection like a modified-live virus vaccine, but with the flexibility and safety profile of an inactivated viral vaccine.

Highest level of protection for your cattle

    • Fetal Protection vaccines from Zoetis have achieved the highest label claims available by earning their FP status in clinical trials and extensive field use for more than 25 years.
    • BOVI-SHIELD GOLD FP, CATTLEMASTER GOLD FP and PREGGUARD GOLD FP have demonstrated protection against reproductive diseases, IBR abortion and BVD persistent infection.
      • IBR is identified as a common cause of pregnancy loss in U.S. cattle herds and may present as abortion storms, sporadic abortions usually occur during mid-to-late gestation.1
      • Unprotected pregnant cattle exposed to animals shedding BVD viruses early in gestation may result in early pregnancy loss or fetal infection, which can lead to the birth of a persistently infected (PI) calf.1
    • There are no fully inactivated (killed) or ready-to-use vaccines on the market that have met the U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) standard for earning fetal protection label claims. Neither ViraShield® nor Triangle® have met the USDA standard for demonstrating reproductive protection against IBR abortion, BVD fetal infection or BVD persistent infection; as a result, they are not approved against reproductive diseases caused by IBR or BVD viruses.

Set up the cow herd up for a lifetime of success

    • The health and well-being of a calf begins in the womb. Annual vaccination with Fetal Protection vaccines, like BOVI-SHIELD GOLD FP, CATTLEMASTER GOLD FP and PREGGUARD GOLD FP, protects against respiratory and reproductive diseases, helps increase reproductive efficiency and prevents reproductive losses for a more profitable operation.
    • Research has shown increased longevity in heifers that conceive in the first 21-day breeding period.2 Reducing disease challenges through an effective vaccination program and adequate nutrition can help heifers conceive earlier and potentially increase their lifetime productivity.
  • The BOVI-SHIELD GOLD FP® line of vaccines features five combinations so you can match your vaccine program to the reproductive disease challenges in your area.

    Precautions
*Do not use in pregnant cows (abortions can result) unless they were vaccinated, according to label directions, with any BOVI-SHIELD GOLD FP or PREGGUARD GOLD FP vaccine within the past 12 months. Do not use in calves nursing pregnant cows unless their dams were vaccinated within the past 12 months as described above. To help ensure safety in pregnant cattle, heifers must receive at least 2 doses of any BOVI-SHIELD GOLD FP or PREGGUARD GOLD FP product with the second dose administered approximately 30 days prebreeding.

    • Store at 2°C to 7°C. Prolonged exposure to higher temperatures and/or direct sunlight may adversely affect potency. Do not freeze.
    • Use entire contents when first opened.
    • Sterilized syringes and needles should be used to administer this vaccine. Do not sterilize with chemicals because traces of disinfectant may inactivate the vaccine.
    • Burn containers and all unused contents.
    • Do not vaccinate within 21 days before slaughter.
    • Contains gentamicin as a preservative.
    • Vaccination of stressed animals should be delayed.
    • As with many vaccines, anaphylaxis may occur after use. Initial antidote of epinephrine is recommended and should be followed with appropriate supportive therapy.
  • The CATTLEMASTER GOLD FP® products are the first and only killed bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) vaccines with the power to deliver fetal protection from BVD persistent infection and infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) virus abortion. CATTLEMASTER GOLD FP combines inactivated BVD Types 1 and 2 viruses with proprietary, temperature-sensitive modified-live virus (MLV) strains of IBR and parainfluenza 3 (PI3) viruses and an MLV bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) that is nonshedding, doesn’t suppress the immune system and is nonabortigenic. This innovative process gives CATTLEMASTER GOLD FP the safety of a killed viral vaccine with the protection of a MLV vaccine. CATTLEMASTER GOLD FP vaccines are safe for any cow, any calf, any time.

CATTLEMASTER GOLD FP 5 L5 is for vaccination of healthy cattle, including pregnant cows.
