Frequently Asked Questions

REVOLUTION® PLUS adds several ticks to the spectrum of the original Feline REVOLUTION® product, which contains selamectin. Combining sarolaner with selamectin also introduces unique bi-modal or dual action adulticide activity against both fleas and ear mites. Selamectin has efficacy against fleas, flea eggs, ear mites, roundworms, hookworms and heartworms. Sarolaner has efficacy against fleas, ticks and ear mites. When sarolaner is combined with selamectin in REVOLUTION® PLUS, the spectrum of parasites covered broadens to include most of the common parasites for cats and kittens: fleas, ticks, ear mites, roundworms, hookworms, and heartworms.

REVOLUTION® PLUS contains two active pharmaceutical ingredients, selamectin and sarolaner. Selamectin is a semisynthetic macrocyclic lactone compound of the avermectin class, while sarolaner is from the isoxazoline family. The two active ingredients in REVOLUTION® PLUS exert their anti-parasitic activity through distinct modes of action, exerting unique bi-modal or dual action activity against both fleas and ear mites. By combining the two ingredients into a single product, the spectrum of activity of the combination product expands beyond that of either product individually. Refer to "REVOLUTION PLUS Dual MOA" video.

REVOLUTION® PLUS contains two active ingredients: selamectin and sarolaner.

Selamectin is a macrocyclic lactone compound. Selamectin primarily disables parasites by binding to and activating glutamate-gated chloride channels allowing chloride ions to enter the nerve cells. The influx of chloride ions causes paralysis and death of the parasite. Selamectin provides protection against fleas, flea eggs, ear mites, roundworms, hookworms and heartworms.

Sarolaner is from the isoxazoline class. Sarolaner primarily disables parasites by selectively blocking GABA-gated chloride channels. This prevents the uptake of chloride ions which results in increased nerve stimulation and in death of the target parasite. Sarolaner provides protection against fleas, ticks and ear mites.

Refer to "REVOLUTION PLUS Dual MOA" video.

In the United States, REVOLUTION® PLUS is approved for use in cats 8 weeks of age and older and weighing 2.8 pounds or greater. Cats are not small dogs and the same drug can have differing pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) profiles in dogs and cats. Additionally, the label dose of sarolaner in SIMPARICA® for dogs is a minimum dose of 2 mg/kg administered orally. The dose of sarolaner in REVOLUTION® PLUS in cats is a minimum of 1 mg/kg applied topically.

Refer to “SIMPARICA® Prescribing Information” for additional information on SIMPARICA® use in dogs.

REVOLUTION® PLUS is only approved for use in cats and kittens 8 weeks of age and older and weighing 2.8 pounds or greater. The FDA-approved dose range for sarolaner in REVOLUTION® PLUS is 1-2 mg/kg. Applying the full dose (2.5 mg sarolaner per tube) of REVOLUTION® PLUS GOLD (2.8-5.5 lbs weight band) to a 2.8 lb kitten delivers the upper limit (2 mg/kg) of the FDA-approved dose range. Thus, the minimum weight for REVOLUTION® PLUS GOLD is 2.8 lbs. For kittens weighing less than 2.8 lbs, consider using the legacy feline product, REVOLUTION (selamectin) MAUVE (Up to 5 lbs weight band) which is FDA-approved for use in kittens less than 2.8 lbs.”

The safe use of REVOLUTION® PLUS has not been established in breeding, pregnant, or lactating cats. As such, Zoetis cannot recommend its use in these patients. Instead consider using the legacy feline product, REVOLUTION® (selamectin) which is FDA-approved for use in breeding, pregnant, or lactating cats.

A broad range of concomitant medications have been administered with REVOLUTION® PLUS including the following classes of product: vaccines, systemic antibiotics, anesthetics, corticosteroids, analgesics, psycholeptics, ophthalmologics, blood products, anti-emetics, anti-inflammatory medications, anti-virals, topical corticosteroid preparations, otologicals, vitamins, antibiotics, antiepileptics, endectocides and anthelmintics.

The United States Package Insert states: In three well-controlled field studies, REVOLUTION® PLUS was used concurrently with other medications, such as vaccines, cestocidal anthelmintics, antibacterials, sedatives, anesthetics, opioid analgesics, corticosteroids, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatories. No adverse reactions were associated with the concurrent use of REVOLUTION® PLUS and other medications.

Specific medications administered to cats in the United States clinical trials included: acepromazine, amoxicillin, ampicillin, atipamezole, atropine, barium sulfate, cefazolin, cefpodoxime, clindamycin, diazepam, dexamethasone, enrofloxacin, epsiprantel, erythromycin, famotidine, fenbendazole, fentanyl, fipronil, fluconazole, gabapentin, isoflurane, ivermectin, lufenuron, marbofloxacin, maropitant, meloxicam, methylprednisolone, metoclopramide, metronidazole, miconazole, midazolam, milbemycin, morphine, mupirocin, neomycin, ofloxacin, omeprazole, oxytetracycline, pentoxifylline, phenobarbital, prednisolone, procaine penicillin, pyrethrins and pyrethroids, robenacoxib, salicylic acid, sevoflurane, spinosad, tobramycin, triamcinolone, benzylpenicillin, bupivacaine, ciprofloxacin, doxycycline, idoxuridine, ketoprofen, lidocaine, orbifloxacin, penicillins with extended spectrum, and xylazine.6-9

Though certain ticks are more prominent in certain areas (i.e., Gulf Coast tick in Southeastern and mid-Atlantic states; American dog tick east of the Rocky Mountains and Pacific coast; black-legged or deer tick across eastern U.S.), veterinary customers and pet owners alike should be vigilant with year-round tick and other pest protection in all 50 states to ensure cats and kittens of every lifestyle (indoor-only, indoor/outdoor, outdoor-only) are properly protected with broad-spectrum preventative medicine such as REVOLUTION® PLUS.22

There have been no studies conducted to specifically evaluate the effect of bathing after treatment with REVOLUTION® PLUS. On this basis, it would be advisable to bathe the animal first, then allow enough time for the skin to dry prior to dosing.

Referring to selamectin, the United States Package Insert for REVOLUTION® PLUS states: “The effectiveness of REVOLUTION® PLUS against D. immitis after bathing has not been evaluated. Bathing or shampooing the cat 24 hours after treatment does not reduce the effectiveness of topical selamectin, one of the ingredients of REVOLUTION® PLUS, against D. immitis.”

Selamectin, one of the active ingredients in REVOLUTION® PLUS, is a macrocyclic lactone compound. These compounds effectively prevent the development of adult heartworms when administered to cats within one month of exposure to infective (L3) Dirofilaria immitis larvae. This product effectively eliminates the tissue stage of heartworm larvae for a month after infection. Cats with unknown heartworm history that test negative prior to the initiation of REVOLUTION® PLUS may be harboring pre-patent infections at the time REVOLUTION® PLUS was started. Testing such animals 3-4 months after initiation of REVOLUTION® PLUS would be necessary to confirm their negative heartworm status. At the discretion of the veterinarian, cats ≥ 6 months of age may be tested to determine the presence of existing heartworm infections before beginning treatment with REVOLUTION® PLUS. Cats already infected with adult heartworms can be given REVOLUTION® PLUS monthly to prevent further infections.

REVOLUTION® PLUS builds on the proven protection of Feline REVOLUTION® (selamectin). REVOLUTION® has protection against fleas, flea eggs, ear mites, roundworms, hookworms, and heartworms. REVOLUTION® PLUS adds the advanced flea- and tick-killing power of sarolaner, which widens the broad-spectrum protection of the legacy product. The combination of selamectin and sarolaner adds indications for 3 species of ticks along with delivering a unique dual-action adulticide protection against fleas and ear mites. Regardless of your feline patient’s lifestyle (indoor-only, indoor/outdoor, outdoor-only), REVOLUTION® PLUS should be considered for every cat, every month.

“100% indoor-only” cats commonly present to veterinary clinics with diseases or parasites that are found normally in outdoor habitats. “Indoor-only” cats might not be exclusively indoor-only (ex. access to patios or balconies) and a cat that is 100% indoors "today" might not be "tomorrow" if it escapes or is taken outdoors. Further, since parasites are not 'outdoor-only', even truly 100% indoor-only cats are still at risk. Fleas, ticks, ear mites, intestinal worms, and heartworms can get into any home. Parasites hitchhike indoors on other pets or creatures, on shoes and clothes, or get inside through doors and windows. Regardless of the cat or kitten's lifestyle (indoor-only, indoor/outdoor, outdoor-only), REVOLUTION® PLUS should be considered for every cat, every month.

Tick ranges are expanding throughout the country and the threat is ongoing. Cats and kittens of every age and lifestyle (indoor-only, indoor/outdoor, outdoor-only) can regularly come in contact with ticks and their health risks.

According to CAPC, tick-borne diseases are diagnosed in all 50 states.22

Diseases like Lyme, Anaplasmosis, and Ehrlichiosis require ticks to spread disease, and ticks nationwide are infecting cats. You may not see ticks commonly on your feline patients for several reasons.

  • Cats are fastidious groomers and can groom ticks off quickly, before they are noticed by people
  • Ticks only spend a fraction of their lifespan on the cat; most species spend only a couple of hours to a couple of days on hosts
  • Their small size makes it extremely easy to miss them; in fact, depending on the stage (nymph, larvae or adult), Ixodes scapularis ticks range in size from ~0.5mm (larvae)-2.5mm (unfed adult female).19

REVOLUTION® PLUS is indicated for the treatment and control of tick infestations with black-legged or deer tick (Ixodes scapularis), Gulf Coast tick (Amblyomma maculatum), and American dog tick (Dermacentor variabilis) for a full month. Effective results were sustained for up to 5 weeks for black-legged or deer tick and the American dog tick.6,8

The weight bands for REVOLUTION® PLUS are different than the weight bands for legacy Feline REVOLUTION® because of the addition of sarolaner to selamectin. The dosing ranges of the two active ingredients were chosen based on ideal pharmacokinetic profiles to optimize safety and efficacy.

*Cats over 22 lbs should be treated with the appropriate combination of tubes. FDA-approved for use in cats and kittens 8 weeks of age and older.
