BUILT-IN ASSURANCE

Administering the right treatment in the right way is essential to any dairy health routine. EXCEDE® (ceftiofur crystalline free acid) Sterile Suspension offers a convenient base-of-ear (BOE) administration with zero milk withholding and a 13-day meat withholding time following the last dose.

Before administering any treatment, check your dairy’s protocols. The following administration tips ensure EXCEDE will be as effective as it can be.

  • Read the complete package insert before administering EXCEDE.
  • For treatment of acute metritis, administer EXCEDE as a subcutaneous BOE injection at a dose of 1.5 mL per 100 lb. body weight. Repeat this dose in the opposite ear 72 hours after the initial dose.
  • For BRD and foot rot, administer EXCEDE as a single subcutaneous BOE injection at a dose of 1.5 mL per 100 lb. body weight.
  • Do not vary from the labeled route of administration as this can affect the length of meat or milk withdrawal times and could lead to violative milk residues and extended withdrawal times.
  • Deliver full contents of the syringe.
  • Do not administer in the neck.
  • Most animals respond to treatment within three to five days. If you don’t observe any improvement, you should re-evaluate the diagnosis.

ADDITIONAL ADMINISTRATION OPTIONS

ROSTRAL BASE-OF-EAR ADMINISTRATION

ROSTRAL BASE-OF-EAR ADMINISTRATION

Hold the syringe and needle behind the ear to be dosed so that the needle and syringe are pointing in an imaginary line toward the animal’s eye on the same side of the head. Insert the needle through the loose skin at the BOE while maintaining the needle position.

OPPOSITE EYE BASE-OF-EAR ADMINISTRATION

Hold the syringe and needle behind the ear to be dosed so the needle and syringe point in an imaginary line toward the animal’s opposite eye. Insert the needle through the loose skin at the BOE while maintaining the needle position.

RESPONSIBLE USE OF ANTIBIOTICS

To ensure the best product efficacy, it’s critical that EXCEDE is administered accurately. This begins with accurate capturing of body weights. Without accurately capturing body weights, cattle can be underdosed or overdosed, decreasing the antibiotic’s effectiveness and creating a poor response to treatment. This can result in an increase in treatments and labor costs due to a relapse of metritis. You should:

  • Stop guessing or “eyeballing” her weight
  • Capture individual weights using a weight tape or digital cattle scale
  • Weigh cows throughout each lactation: at freshening, one to two weeks post-freshening and at dry off

Through the responsible use of antibiotics, we all can maintain the effectiveness of these important resources.

CONTACT YOUR ZOETIS REPRESENTATIVE OR VETERINARIAN

If you have questions about administration of EXCEDE, contact your Zoetis representative or your veterinarian.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION: People with known hypersensitivity to penicillin or cephalosporins should avoid exposure to EXCEDE. EXCEDE is contraindicated in animals with known allergy to ceftiofur or to the β-lactam group (penicillins and cephalosporins) of antimicrobials. Do not use in horses intended for human consumption. The administration of antimicrobials in horses under conditions of stress may be associated with diarrhea, which may require appropriate veterinary therapy. In cattle, inadvertent intra-arterial injection is possible and fatal. Do not use in calves to be processed for veal. Pre-slaughter withdrawal time in cattle is 13 days.
