Control pain at the site of inflammation and the dorsal horn of the spinal cord
RIMADYL® (carprofen) Injectable: One dose provides 24 hours of pain relief for dogs
Active at the site of inflammation
Preoperative administration of RIMADYL Injectable could lead to higher tissue concentration at the surgical site due to:2
- Effects of anesthetic drugs on drug distribution
- Effects of inflammation on protein concentration at the surgical site
- High protein-binding capacity of RIMADYL
Carprofen concentration at the surgical site during the initiation of the inflammatory response is one explanation for why preoperative administration provides preemptive analgesia.
Providing substantial analgesia
RIMADYL Injectable administered at 4.4 mg/kg (2.0 mg/lb) provides analgesia as early as 2 hours after administration and lasts for 24 hours after soft tissue and orthopedic surgery.10-11
In clinical studies, the level of analgesia provided by RIMADYL Injectable was better than pethidine (meperidine) or buprenorphine and similar to morphine for dogs undergoing ovariohysterectomy.12-15 RIMADYL Injectable also decreases swelling at the surgical site, a benefit that is unique to NSAIDs.14
Because RIMADYL Injectable is bioequivalent to the oral formulation of RIMADYL, administration of RIMADYL Injectable can be followed 24 hours later by either RIMADYL Chewable or Caplet for continuous pain management at home.
RIMADYL complements the analgesia of other analgesics, including opioids and alpha-2 agonists such as DEXDOMITOR® (dexmedetomidine).
RIMADYL is approved for administration in healthy dogs 6 weeks and older so that even young dogs can experience the benefits of analgesia with RIMADYL Injectable.Click here for complete site references list
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION: As a class, NSAIDs may be associated with gastrointestinal, kidney and liver side effects. These are usually mild, but may be serious. Pet owners should discontinue therapy and contact their veterinarian immediately if side effects occur. Evaluation for pre-existing conditions and regular monitoring are recommended for pets on any medication, including RIMADYL. Use with other NSAIDs or corticosteroids should be avoided. See full Prescribing Information.
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION: Do not use DEXDOMITOR in dogs or cats and ANTISEDAN in dogs with cardiovascular disease, respiratory disorders, liver or kidney diseases, or in conditions of shock, severe debilitation, or stress due to extreme heat, cold or fatigue. DEXDOMITOR should not be administered in the presence of preexisting hypotension, hypoxia, or bradycardia. As with all α2-adrenoceptor agonists, the potential for isolated cases of hypersensitivity, including paradoxical response (excitation), exists with DEXDOMITOR. The use of DEXDOMITOR as a preanesthetic in dogs and cats significantly reduces the amount of induction and maintenance anesthetic requirements. Careful patient monitoring is necessary to avoid anesthetic overdose. Arrhythmias, bradycardia, apnea, emesis, convulsions, hypersalivation may occur with DEXDOMITOR use. Severe dyspnea and respiratory crackles due to acute or delayed pulmonary edema could develop in cats. DEXDOMITOR has not been evaluated for use in breeding, pregnant, or lactating dogs or cats; in dogs younger than 16 weeks of age or in cats younger than 12 weeks of age; in geriatric dogs or cats. Occasional vomiting may occur with ANTISEDAN use. Rarely, a brief state of excitement or apprehensiveness may be seen in ANTISEDAN-treated dogs. Other potential side effects of α2-antagonists, such as ANTISEDAN, include hypersalivation, diarrhea, and tremors. For more safety information, see full Prescribing Information.
